Dears CFA-European clubs and exhibitors,

Following the last Board meeting, I have received numerous questions regarding rumors about eventual changes in the showrules affecting our division.

I have asked CFA-secretary Rachel Anger and she kindly gave me the following information:

2 changes in the showrules affecting our Division have been voted by the board.

Both will be effective starting from the next show season.

First of all I would like to thank Darrell Newkirk, our chairman, who presented these resolutions and invested his energy to support our Division.

1) The number of DW awards in Kitten and Championship will be increased from 15 to 20.

This is a great new! Of course, as I want always more for our division, I regret that the board didn't also increase the number of DW in Premiership that will stay only 10 spots. It would have been nice to get 15.

But again, I think this increase is great and I hope these 5 additional spots will bring this title a little more accessible for exhibitors that can not travel everywhere to collect pts.

2) The number of GC/GP pts required to earn the title will be changed as follow:
Europe: 200/75

Ukraine: 75/25

Russia (excl. Moscow): 75/25

Moscow: 125/25

based on the address of the owner of the cat.

I am much less enthusiastic about this resolution because it still favors this particular area against the rest of Europe and will probably anyway not be applicable. I don't see how CO will be able to trace between 2 addresses in Russia whether it is close or far from Moscow when CO already gets confused between Sweden and Switzerland for ex...

I also haven't received any information as how the points will be scored and adapted as many cats are shown in all these 3 different locations and will have different requirements.

Maybe at this point I need to say clearly that I am absolutely not against the principle of points adjustment.

Only I think it should be reserved to support areas where otherwise exhibitors would not have a chance to grand their cats. This is no longer the case for Russia and Ukraine thanks to their fantastic growth. The question is not whether it is difficult or not, it should not be easy to grand a cat. It is the reason why not all cats grand. A 1 show grand should be an achievement reserved to absolutely special cats. This is the case in every other area of CFA.

I am not trying to denigrate the quality of the cats in Russia and Ukraine, I have been there several times and am aware of how competitive the cats are but with an average of 5-8 one show grands at each show and a record of 16 one show grands in one show, I think it shows clearly that there is a misbalance compared to the rest of CFA.

The same title (GC) should be more or less equally difficult to get everywhere.

My suggestion would be that one, or better, several of the european clubs submit a resolution for the annual meeting asking to even the situation in our Division regarding GC-pts requirements.

This resolution would be presented at the delegate meeting and voted by them.

While I am writting this report, I just received an email from our Liaison Liz Waston to inform me that a 3rd resolution has been voted that might concern us as well:

3) From next show season it will be allowed to attempt 2 one day shows in different locations the same weekend

(1 saturday and 1 sunday).

The Cat Fanciers’ Association, Inc. (CFA) will launch the complete
reorganization of their DNA testing program on Friday, October 1, 2010. This
new program will be a cooperative effort between the Cat Fanciers’
Association, Inc., and the Texas A&M University Animal Genetics Laboratory
(TAES).

DNA testing, with samples collected and submitted by owners, will be handled
using SNP array genetic evaluation. This novel state-of-the-art testing
procedure can definitively establish parentage, identity, genetic disease,
and traits such as color.

The complete DNA panel will include the following tests:

• Identity/Parentage Markers and Sex determinate markers
• Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD)
• Mucopolysaccharidosis Type VI,VI Mild and MPSVII (MPS1, MPSM, MPS7)
• Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (MYBPC3M, MYBPC3R) Totally valid for Ragdoll only
• Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)
• B blood type (BLDAB)
• Albino (ALBIN)
• Cinnamon (CINNAM)
• Chocolate (CHOC2)
• Points (Points1 and Points2)
• Recessive black (AGOUTI)
• Dilute (DILUT)
• Longhair1, Longhair2, Longhair 4, and Longhair 4_2

A paternity/identity fingerprint, as well as an up-to-date genetic disease
and color profile certificate, will be produced as the result of DNA testing
of individual cats. This cutting edge testing panel is available at the
reasonable cost of $55.00 per cat.

Roger Brown, DVM, chair of CFA’s Scientific Advisory Committee, said, “With
the use of these genetic tests, a breeder can determine if unwanted genes
are present in either the sire or dam, and can then choose their breeding
pairs accordingly. Breeders can work together to identify the possible
genetic makeup of kittens to be produced, and thereby have healthier
breeding programs plus strengthen the overall health of their chosen breed.”
